These guidelines describe how law enforcement, government agencies, and other lawful authorities can request information from JMeetups. JMeetups is committed to working in good faith with authorities while protecting the privacy and rights of our community members in accordance with applicable law.
How to contact us
Send all legal process and law enforcement inquiries to:
Email: support@jmeetups.com
Subject line: Law Enforcement Request โ [your agency]
Website: https://www.jmeetups.com
Please serve formal legal process electronically when possible (e.g., PDF attachment with agency letterhead) to avoid delays.
What we require
JMeetups will respond to requests that comply with applicable law. The type of legal process required depends on what is being requested:
- Basic subscriber information (name on account, email address, account creation date, last login date, IP address): subpoena issued in connection with an active investigation.
- Non-content records (logs of when the account was used, account-level metadata, message timestamps without content): court order under 18 U.S.C. ยง 2703(d) or equivalent state authority.
- Content of communications (message bodies, photos, profile content): search warrant issued by a court of competent jurisdiction upon a showing of probable cause.
- Preservation request (asking us to preserve records pending a forthcoming legal process): formal preservation letter under 18 U.S.C. ยง 2703(f). We will preserve records for 90 days, extendable on a second request.
Emergency requests
In cases involving imminent danger of death or serious physical injury, JMeetups may voluntarily disclose information without legal process under 18 U.S.C. ยง 2702(b)(8). To make an emergency request, contact us at the email above with "EMERGENCY" in the subject line. Emergency requests must come from an official law enforcement email address and describe the nature of the emergency.
What we generally retain
Subject to our retention policies and any active legal holds:
- Account profile information โ for the duration of the account, plus up to 30 days after closure
- Messages โ up to 90 days from the date sent (encrypted at rest)
- Activity logs โ up to 90 days, or longer if relevant to an ongoing investigation
- IP addresses โ recent login IPs are retained for up to 90 days
Records subject to a preservation request or legal hold are retained for the duration of the hold.
User notification
JMeetups' policy is to notify users about legal process seeking their information so they may have an opportunity to respond, unless:
- We are legally prohibited from doing so (e.g., a non-disclosure order under 18 U.S.C. ยง 2705(b))
- The request involves child sexual abuse material, human trafficking, or imminent threats to life
- Notification would otherwise be counterproductive to legitimate law enforcement purposes
International requests
JMeetups is based in the United States. We respond to international legal process generally through the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) process or letters rogatory. We may, at our discretion, respond to certain emergency requests directly when consistent with U.S. law.
Cost reimbursement
JMeetups may seek reimbursement for the costs associated with producing records, as permitted by 18 U.S.C. ยง 2706 and other applicable law.
Reports to NCMEC
JMeetups reports apparent child sexual abuse material (CSAM) to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) CyberTipline as required by 18 U.S.C. ยง 2258A. Records related to NCMEC reports are preserved consistent with that statute.
