There is a lot of us singles who can feel lost in a synagogue and almost embarrassed to be the one we are. Whether you are new to observance, new to the neighborhood, or just returning after time away, walking into a shul for the first time can feel intimidating. Here are five ideas to help you feel at home.
1. Start with a Welcoming Community
Not every shul has the same vibe. Some are more formal, some are more relaxed. Visit a few and find one where you feel comfortable. Many synagogues have beginner-friendly services or young professional minyanim that can be a great starting point.
2. Introduce Yourself to the Rabbi
Rabbis are there to help. Do not be shy about introducing yourself, explaining that you are new, and asking questions. Most rabbis will be thrilled to welcome you and help you find your place in the community.
3. Come for Kiddush
The social time after services is often the best way to meet people. Grab a plate, find someone who looks friendly, and start a conversation. You will be surprised how welcoming people can be.
4. Join a Class or Study Group
Many shuls offer Torah classes, discussion groups, or learning partnerships. These smaller settings are a great way to build connections and learn at the same time.
5. Volunteer
Offer to help set up for kiddush, organize an event, or assist with a community project. There is no faster way to become part of a community than to contribute to it.
Every regular was once a newcomer. Give yourself permission to be new, and give the community a chance to welcome you.
